Country stares at lockdown dilemma amid a surge in cases Modi to interact with CMs today; a few states favor some form of lockdown

With a week to go for the end of Lockdown 3.0, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with chief ministers on Monday to discuss the next course of action, as the country faces the dilemma of whether to extend the restrictions once more amid spiralling Covid-19 cases.

The Prime Minister’s Office tweeted on Sunday that Modi will hold his fifth video-conference with CMs at 3 pm on Monday afternoon.

As the PM gets ready for another meeting, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba on Sunday reviewed the status of Covid-19 management with chief secretaries and health secretaries of all states and Union Territories, making it clear that states will have to decide on the severity of the measures needed to rein in the outbreak.

A range of views emerged in Gauba’s meeting, with some states pitching for home quarantining instead of institutional quarantining and limiting the lockdown to containment zones instead of entire districts being sequestered. Some states also favoured the lockdown beyond May 17 in “some form”.

Telangana has already increased the lockdown till May 29, while Maharashtra has also dropped indications to this effect.
